Dr. Rui Providência is a Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and a Professor of Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Evidence Synthesis at University College London. With over 340 published works, he has made significant contributions to the adoption of cryoballoon technology, contact-force sensing, and the direct oral anticoagulants for managing atrial fibrillation (AF). Dr. Providência’s current research is funded by the European Research Council/HORIZON/UK Research and Innovation and focuses on the epidemiology of AF across Europe, delving into related genetic, proteomic, and radiomic aspects. Additionally, he serves on the European Society of Cardiology Artificial Intelligence for Guidelines Task Force and has contributed with methodological and clinical expertise to the recent European Cardiac Arrhythmia Society Guidelines on Catheter Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation. He has extensive experience in systematic reviews being a member of the Editorial Board for the Cochrane Library and was involved in providing Evidence Synthesis for the new World Health Organization guideline on Acute Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease. Dr. Providência provides advise on the safety, efficacy and quality of medicines in the UK as a Commissioner for the Commission on Human Medicines – Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.
