Prashanthan Sanders, MD, PhD

Professor Sanders is a clinical academic at the University of Adelaide, and Royal Adelaide Hospital. He is the Director of the Centre for Heart Rhythm Disorders at the University of Adelaide and the Director of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Professor Sanders holds the Heart Foundation Chair of Cardiology. He has published more than 700 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He has been awarded several accolades including the Distinguished Scientist Award 2024 from the Heart Rhythm Society, the 2024 RT Hall Prize by the CSANZ, the Clarivate High Cite Research Award 2023, and the Eric Susman Prize from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for the best contribution to the knowledge of any branch of internal medicine. In addition, Prof Sanders has received multiple grants through the NHMRC which has enabled him to establish a formidable, diverse multidisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers across the spectrum of research into heart rhythm disorders. His research program, founded on an understanding of the substrate for AF, has continued with an evaluation of techniques to reverse and prevent the substrate for AF. The work from his group has led to a paradigm change in the approach to the management of AF with the recognition of the importance of managing risk factors and comorbidities in individuals with AF.
