Prof. Hans Kottkamp founded and headed several departments including the Department of Electrophysiology at the Heart Center Leipzig in Germany in 1998, and the Department of Electrophysiology at Hirslanden Hospital Zurich in Switzerland in 2006. Hans Kottkamp serves as a Medical Advisor for Kardium Inc. as well as Principal Investigator for clinical studies.
Prof. Kottkamp´s research focuses on all aspects of catheter ablation of arrhythmias and also on the pathophysiology of arrhythmias, especially of atrial fibrillation. He has introduced the concept of “fibrotic atrial cardiomyopathy” FACM as the leading cause of atrial fibrosis in atrial fibrillation patients, he has established the substrate modification concept of “box isolation of fibrotic areas” BIFA, and he has introduced “multielectrode contact mapping plus ablation with a single catheter” with the Globe array as Principal Investigator.
In 2003, Hans Kottkamp has been appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of Leipzig. He wrote or co-authored more than 200 publications in international journals and monographs. He won several prices, one of them being the Wunderlich Preis 1999 for “Best Clinical Teacher” at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Leipzig, and one other of them being the “Simon Dack Award” of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in 2016.
Dr. Kottkamp served as a Section Editor for the J Am Coll Cardiol and in the Editorial Board of JACC CEP, Heart Rhythm and J Cardiovasc Electrophysiol, and he served as a Reviewer for all major international Cardiology/Electrophysiology journals.
